This property was built in 1920. The call to action was to create an open floor plan on the first floor for a new kitchen with custom cabinetry, an oversized island, and modern appliances. This home renovation included a complete demo of the kitchen, living room, stairs, and 2nd-floor bathroom. This was one of our favorite home renovations we completed in Dubuque in 2020. This 12-room home was built in 1932 with six bedrooms, a finished attic, and an enclosed 196-square-foot porch. Our client retained us to remove all the wood sidings from the roof line to the concrete supports. Although the home's interior remained in excellent condition, the outer shell and underlying wood had decayed and required replacement. The front porch was removed, and a new open porch was built with traditional-style pillars and a black rod-iron handrail system. Click the photo to view the project video.

This project is the result of the landlord collaborating with a local photographer to build a new studio at Jackson and 9th Street in Dubuque’s prestigious Millwork District Remove. The plan called for the demo, and removal of the existing bathroom and components. The bathroom was relocated to facilitate a new hallway. We removed the existing doors and trim, matched all components, and constructed new walls. We painted the interior walls and ceilings and repaired the old floors. Throughout this renovation, our goal was to preserve and enhance the historic look and feel of this space. To view a short YouTube video of the S. Kelly Photography Studio, CLICK HERE.

The need for a handrail system was negated by the construction of two steps down and around the base of the new deck. This change provides access to all sides and access to a stamped concrete patio.
